AHRQ's Division of Practice Improvement advances the science of clinical practice improvement; evaluates and supports innovative models of practice transformation in diverse settings; facilitates communities of learning to promote the implementation of evidence for practice improvement; and serves as a trusted source of evidence and tools for methods, measures, and evaluation of practice improvement.

As a Physician in the Division of Practice Improvement, you make substantive contributions to the research and program development activities in the area of practice improvement, including care transitions among primary care, specialty care and community-based care, long-term care, and innovative models of care for older adults, as well as people with multiple chronic conditions across the life course.

  • You contribute directly to the research agenda by conceptualizing, planning, and executing both the intramural and extramural research agenda by providing technical assistance on research, program implementation, and policy issues related to aging.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert on clinical and/or practice interventions and assisting with the development, execution and evaluation of dissemination and implementation projects to increase the uptake and use of effective clinical interventions and models of care for older adults.
  • Promoting healthy aging and health care delivery system change by initiating and developing new projects by developing new partnerships and tools to support healthy aging and high quality care for older adults.
  • Serving as a Program Official for extramural grants related to aging and practice improvement with a focus on geriatric clinical care including people living with multiple chronic conditions, care transitions, long-term care, patient/caregiver engagement, and innovative models of care for older adults.
  • Drafting articles or commentaries, reviewing Agency resources or products, responding to external communications or Departmental requests, and making presentations to federal or external organizations.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: A copy of your unofficial transcripts, ECFMG certification, or verification of your successful completion of the US Medical Licensing Examination is required as part of your application by the closing date of this announcement. If selected, official transcripts will be required.

OPM Individual Occupational Requirements for the 0602 series:

  • Degree: You must have a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

  • Degree from Foreign Medical School: You must provide a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school and must provide documentation that the applicant's education and medical knowledge is equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country.

OR

Documentation that verifies successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

PLEASE NOTE: Failure to do provide any of the required documentation will result in you being rated ineligible for this position. A copy of your unofficial transcripts, ECFMG certification, or verification of your successful completion of the US Medical Licensing Examination is required as part of your application by the closing date of this announcement. Copies of diplomas will not be accepted as verification that the above education requirement has been met.

AND

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.

For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.

An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, or pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.

AND

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GS-14 LEVEL: You must have an additional 4 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; community; student; social). If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.
