The nurse will work in the intermediate care unit focused on caring for pulmonary, cardiac, and trauma patients. The patient population includes those needing advanced airway management, including patients with tracheostomies, ventilators, high flow oxygen, or BiPAP support. Patients on various cardiac drips are also included, as well as those with chest tubes and Zephyr valves. This unit treats a range of acute and chronic pulmonary conditions, congestive heart failure, suspected myocardial infarction, and unstable angina. It also encompasses patients with pericardial disease, cardiac drug toxicity, suspected pacemaker/ICD malfunction, post-device insertion, and patients who require therapeutic catheterization. Nurses must be prepared to manage administration of continuous cardiac medications or oral drug therapy for dysrhythmias. The unit may also include medical/surgical overflow. The nurse is required to float to different specialties including telemetry and med/surg. The role requires adherence to policies that ensure patient safety and comfort. A flu vaccine is required during the flu season. Medical and religious exemptions may be allowed following CMS guidelines. The facility is smoke/nicotine free.
