Job Description:
We are currently searching for a Scientific Communications
Editor to provide support services to satisfy the overall
operational objectives of the NCI/DCEG. This is a full-time,
on-site opportunity in Rockville, MD. Monitor digital media
platform analytics and prepare performance reports.Perform site
administration functions related to updating content and design and
managing site settings and security protocols.Coordinate
photographic and videographic resources to capture quality
imagining and footage for posting to social media and Internet
sites with appropriate captionsMonitor complimentary, associated
and relevant social media and Internet sites and accounts, linking
to relevant content and preparing responses as necessaryResearch
and write in appropriate scientific or technical style various
communication products, to include press releases, newsletter
articles, media releases, fliers, web content and video and podcast
scripts.Compile information for and work with staff on the writing
and editing of key messages on new scientific publications, press
releases, research news highlights, NCI fact sheets, articles for
the Division newsletter, Linkage, responses to inquiries from
Congress, the public or the media, communications and roll-out
plans, web content and social media content. Support internal
communications by developing, editing and reviewing materials for
Division-wide distribution. Provide analysis of DCEG website and
social media performance in order to enhance our digital media
strategy and presence on Twitter. Work with staff on the management
of high-profile projects and roll-out of high-profile research
findings. Provide editing, review and the clearance of study
newsletters. Develop infographics and other visual aids to support
the dissemination of DCEG research. Work with staff on media
training, including the development of media training materials.
Deliver 1-2 group trainings/workshops a year on the uses of social
media for scientists. The trainings will be based on materials
previously developed by Division staff but may require
customization, depending on the audience. Participants in the
training will be asked to complete an evaluation. The contractor
should achieve a score of 'satisfied' (3 on 1-5 scale), or
equivalent measure of effectiveness of the workshop/ training.
Track requests for media interviews with Division experts,
publication of scientific manuscripts and participation of at key
scientific meetings, as allowed per the STOPS contract Travel SOP.
Aid with liaison activities to other components of NCI, including
the Office of Communications and Public Liaison, Office of
Congressional and Government Relations, Office of Advocacy
Relations, and other research Divisions. Review, edit and
coordinate clearance materials that come to DCEG for
review.Research and write innovative strategic communication plans
to communicate information about scientific research initiatives to
ensure that new discoveries are disseminated to key
audiences.Research and write plans for sharing information with the
scientific community and the general public. Attend routine staff
meetings to gather information necessary to develop effective
communication projects, plans and strategies.Research and design
various visual media to include graphics, artwork, and photographs.
Research and write scientific and technical messages, talking
points, frequently asked questions and presentations. Research and
write scientific and technical educational materials for a variety
of print and electronic media platforms. Research and write public
health information and education materials for a variety of print
and electronic platforms. Monitor variety of social media and
Internet sites, blogs, discussion boards, and news sites, conduct
content analysis and report findings. Monitor the effectiveness of
media campaigns through traditional and social media channels,
assess results and report findings. Identify key articles, reviews,
Internet and social media content and assess relevance and impact
to the program.Review visitor feedback and queries submitted
through social media and Internet sites and coordinate timely and
accurate response.Respond to media inquiries promptly. Work with
the team to issue press releases, and with authors to support their
use of press releases.Identify needs and develop content for
various communication mediums to increase visibility of the
program.Meet with internal and external stakeholders to identify
communications gaps and collaboration opportunities. Establish and
maintain positive relationships and engage in two-way dialogue with
key stakeholders.Attend the coordinating committee and working
group meetings as well as weekly meetings of the leadership
team.Coordinate with other program offices to create outreach and
engagement plans.Attend scientific meetings and seminars to
identify new research developments and activities, including
publication/announcement of research results, launching of clinical
trials or initiatives involving new technologies, and
